The archives staff is committed to providing subject access to the department's holdings. Past efforts to provide research accessibility have included an indexed published guide (1990), various in-house indexes developed with the MicroMARC amc program (1993 and later), and the Research Highlights Series (1998). This web site (begun in 1999) provides access to the contents of the collections. Researchers can search 1) the collection descriptions and 2) the collection inventories.
How to do a search: The researcher should first determine which type of search or match is to be made (match all or any terms, or do a boolean search), the format of the search (long or short), and the search or subject terms to be sought (personal name, corporate name, place, subject term, etc.). Once this information is entered, click on the search box. The screen will show the results. IMPORTANT: To search for an organization name, publication title, person's name, or specific phrase, enclose the phrase in the search box in QUOTATION MARKS. Be aware that the searches will not locate word variations.
General Search of the Collection Descriptions: This search should be used by those seeking broad groups or accumulations of papers relating to particular persons, families, groups, organizations, and subjects. The results will based on searches of entries in the Historical Manuscripts Collection descriptions.
Match: All Any Boolean Format: Long Short Search:
General Search of the Collection Inventories: This search should be used by those seeking specific items or references (i.e. names, photographs, documents, titles, etc.) relating to particular persons, families, groups, organizations, and subjects. The results will based on searches of the department inventories (box, folder, and item lists) on this web site. NOTE: This search only surveys inventories developed by the UAA archives staff. It does not contain inventories for copied collections acquired from other institutions. IMPORTANT!! Search results will take the viewer to the beginning of an inventory (or portion thereof), containing the term(s) sought. To locate a specific term in a lengthy inventory (or subdivision), use "Edit>Find in Page" in Netscape, or "Edit>Find [on this page]" in Internet Explorer.
General Search [Function Not in Service] of University Records: This search function should be used for locating specific files or groups of files, publications, or other record materials among the archives of the University of Alaska Anchorage and Anchorage Community College. This function will also locate materials in this department's reference files concerning other University of Alaska units as well as related higher education institutions in Alaska.
Please Note: The archives staff is planning to encode the collection descriptions and inventories in EAD (Encoded Archival Description). This will give researchers the means to search all levels of the finding aids in the archives.
