COLLECTIONS CONTAINING ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS AND PLANS

The following list identifies the main holdings of the UAA Archives and Special Collections Department containing architectural plans and drawings. The list contains modified collection descriptions developed from a various searches of the collections descriptions. The heading for each entry is the same as that found in the Collections List and in the collection description. The text of the description has been modified to provide specific information on the architecture related materials within the collection. Detailed lists are to be found in the inventories attached to the collection descriptions. Those portions of the inventories which relate to architectural materials will be attached to these abbreviated descriptions at some point in the future.

The following list includes collections which are substantially processed and available for research use. Future additions will be made after the materials are processed or when descrete items, unlisted in inventories, are located. Those university records series, which contain architectural materials, will be also be included in the future. Modifications in the count will take place from time to time for the sake of uniformity and in order to arrive at a more specific count.

ALASCOM. WHITE ALICE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM. BOSWELL BAY STATION. Records; 1955-1985. 54 cu. ft. Box and series list. HMC-0001.
This collection contains basic documentation necessary for the construction and operation of a White Alice Communications Site. The collection consists of records housed at the WACS Boswell Bay station. They include operations files, plans and drawings, specifications and manuals, and miscellaneous reference materials. The plans and drawings are site, architectural, mechanical, and electrical plans including as-built drawings.

ALASKA PACIFIC CONSOLIDATED MINING CO. INDEPENDENCE MINE. Records; ca. 1930-1987. 63 cu. ft. Inventory and Series List.
This collection, concerning operations at Independence Mine and other mines in the Willow Mining District, is divided into three parts. Part III (Historic Files and Photographs), Series 4, contains plans for the bunk house, manager's house, mess hall and new mess hall, mill and sorting plant, and the switchboard and trommel.

ALASKA REPERTORY THEATRE, INC. Records; 1976-1989. 70 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains records documenting the history and operation of the Alaska Repertory Theatre, Inc., a state sponsored professional theater company. Series 12, Production Books, includes ground, floor, elevations, and other plans for different productions.

THE ARC OF ANCHORAGE, INC. (ARCA). Records; 1957-2000. 10.7 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of organizational records of The Arc of Anchorage (formerly known as the Association for Retarded Citizens of Anchorage, Inc.) and includes related publications, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, and plans and drawings. Series 15 consists of plans and drawings related to the organization's land and buildings. These include plans for a building for PARCA (Parent's Association for Retarded Citizens of Anchorage, ARCA's pre-1964 precursor), the ARCA Multi-Service Center or ARCA Activity Center (plus additions and improvements), ARCA Park, Jay Circle and Winterhaven residences, and ARCA House residence. Also included is a lot survey from 1983.

EDWIN B. CRITTENDEN (b. 1915). Papers; 1941-1988. 21 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection consists of papers relating to the professional activities of Alaskan architect Edwin B. Crittenden. Series 6, Reference Files, contains plans of various northern building projects.

KARL F. EID (b. 1909). Papers; 1937-1998. 1.75 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers documenting Eid's professional culinary career and those documenting skiing and ski jumping in the Anchorage area. Series 3, Skiing/Ski Jumping Papers, contains 4 drawings of the plans for the 50 meter ski jump at the Karl Eid Jumping Complex, 10 drawings of plans for the 50 meter inrun structure for the Karl Eid Ski Jumps, and a plan for a bronze dedication tablet at the Jim Landes 50 Meter Ski Jump Tower.

MICHAEL HOOD. Papers; 1976-1996. 5 cu. ft. Inventory.
Papers of a UAA faculty member and head of the Theater Department. Series 3 of this collection includes 7 sets of plans and drawings for the new UAA Arts Building constructed in the late 1980s.

BILLY BLACKJACK JOHNSON (b. 1924). Papers; 1923, 1929, 1946, 1969-1986, 1990-1997. 4 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of files relating to the various Alaskan Native organizations in which Billy B. Johnson was involved as well as papers related to his personal life, his mother Ada Blackjack Johnson, and the Jesse Lee Home. Subseries 2c contains drawings of the Jesse Lee Home in Seward, along with plans for a hotel restoration and addition to the complex's buildings (1994 and 1997).

PACIFIC ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS INC. Lost River Comprehensive Feasibility Study; 1973. .2 cu. ft. List.
Pacific Architects and Engineers Inc. presented this study to the City Council of Lost River, Alaska, in 1973. The purpose of the study was to examine the feasibility of building a planned community in which to house employees of the Lost River Mining Company. The collection contains 18 drawings. The drawings include those for: systems concepts of power, heating, fire protection, solid and liquid waste disposal, and potable water (9 drawings); soil and permafrost patterns (2 drawings); foundations and utility concepts (2 drawing); housing density options (1 drawing); and preliminary concepts for the housing and city center, main utilidor service, pedestrian circulation, and vehicular circulation (4 drawings).

POTTER SECTION HOUSE. Report and Plans; 1980, 1986. .1 cu. ft.
The collection consists of a copy of a report recommending the preservation and reuse of the Potter Section House on the Alaska Railroad at mile 100.6, written by the Municipal Historic Landmarks Preservation Committee. There is also a Potter Section House "Site Development Plan" and 2 site maps created by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation.

VICTOR C. RIVERS FAMILY. Papers; 1869-1873, 1915-1977. 6 cu. ft. Published guide and Series list.
Most of the papers in this collection relate to civil engineer and Alaskan politician Victor C. Rivers. Other materials concern his second wife, Elleighfare "Rusty" Rivers, Julian Guy Rivers, Ralph Rivers, Virginia Proffitt, Russell Guy Rivers, Richard L. Rivers, and Fern Rivers. Among Victor C. River's business and professional papers are a copies of a sketch booklet with 7 renderings of buildings; copies of a rendering and 1 main floor plan of a community hospital in the Matanuska Valley; and 1 rendering of the Turnagain Arm Crossing bridge.

HAROLD STRANDBERG (1909-1995). Papers; 1923-1985. 8.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records concerning Harold Strandberg's work as Anchorage Port Commissioner, as a state representative, and as a mining engineer. The collection is divided into three parts: Anchorage Port Commission records; legislative papers; and mining, engineering, and personal papers. Part I, Series 1, contains blueprints and plans of Port of Anchorage sites and facilities. Part III, Series 1, contains site plans for Manley Hot Springs airport lands; general arrangement and framing details for a 50 ton gravity concentration and flotation mill for the Eva Creek Mining Co., Ferry, Alaska; and a washing plant with 6, 4-cell placer jigs for the Klondike Placer Gold Corporation.

UNITED STATES. ARMY. CORPS OF ENGINEERS. ALASKA DISTRICT. ANCHORAGE OFFICE. Papers; 1932-1989. 4.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection consists of historical files and other items from the local Anchorage office of the Corps of Engineers Included in Series 6 is are 2 color architectural renderings; one of a 500 man barracks, and the other of a 120 X 220 foot warehouse.

UNITED STATES. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD. CAPE SPENCER LIGHT STATION. Records; 1924-1973. 1 cu. ft. List.
The collection consists primarily of elevation plans; electrical and mechanical drawings; and as built drawings of the interior and exterior of Cape Spencer Light Station, located at the entrance to Cross Sound in Southeast Alaska. Included in the 56 plans and drawings are elevation plans of the Fog Signal Building, A-C conversion drawings, Automated Station drawings, helipad and dock plans, and other drawings.

UNITED STATES. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD. KENNECOTT RECORDING PROJECT. Reports; 1985, 1987. .2 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the recording team's reports of the buildings at Kennecott Mine. The collection is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of the Phase I report of the recording team. Included are drawings of building plans; photographs; and copies of historic drawings from the HAER file, the collection of Jan Harrower, and from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The buildings that were studied are the mill, west bunkhouse, general manager's office, and the refrigeration plant. Part 2 consists of the final published report of the project. It includes an historic overview of the development, growth, and decline of Kennecott Mine; a bibliography; photographs, maps, and plans of the mine, the surrounding area, and mine buildings; and drawings illustrating various technical processes that were used to extract the copper from ore.

UNITED STATES. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. HISTORIC AMERICAN BUILDING SURVEY. FOREST SERVICE OFFICE AND GARAGE AT PETERSBURG. Report and Plans; 1937, 1987. .3 cu. ft. List.
The collection consists of a report recommending the inclusion of the Forest Service Petersburg Office and Garage in the Historic American Buildings Survey, and five architectural plans of the building. There are also 5 duplicate plans.

UNITED STATES. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. HISTORIC AMERICAN BUILDING SURVEY. NAVAL OPERATING BASE, KODIAK, ALASKA. Report and Plan; 1940, 1984. 1 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of a copy of the report nominating the Kodiak Naval Operating Base and Forts Greely and Abercrombie for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Included are 45 architectural plans of the Engine Overhaul and Aircraft Maintenance Shop of the Kodiak Naval Operating Base.

UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA. LIBRARY PLANNING AND BUILDING FILES. Papers; 1982. .45 cu. ft.
This body of papers was developed in 1982 by University of Alaska librarians to serve as a resource for those considering the development of new college library programs in the state. The third part of the collection contains the University of Alaska guide for building project programming with documents and plans. The plans concern the library at Matanuska-Susitna College.

DAVID WILLIAMS. Papers Concerning the Matanuska Project; 1935-1939. 3 reels, microfilm.
The collection consists of three reels of microfilm containing the papers of government architect David Williams concerning the Matanuska Valley Colony in Palmer. Among the papers are plans for colony buildings and houses.
