COLLECTIONS CONTAINING WORKS OF ART
The following list identifies the major artistic holdings of the UAA Archives and Special Collections Department. The list contains modified collection descriptions developed from a variety of key word searches of the Collections List. These key words include: art, artwork, drawing, sketch, and painting. The heading for each entry is the same as that found in the Collections List and in the collection description. The text of the description has been modified to provide specific information on art contained in the collection. Detailed lists of the art are to be found in the inventories attached to the collection description.
The following lists include collections which are substantially processed and available for research use. Future additions will be made after the materials are processed or when discrete items, unlisted in inventories, are located. Those university records series which contain artifacts will be also be included in the future.

"ALASKA AT WAR"
SYMPOSIUM. Records; 1992-1996. 4 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection
consists of the records regarding this conference on World War
II in Alaska. Series 6 contains 6 sheets of art for symposium
posters; one Alaska at War Conference and Symposium matted poster;
and a poster entitled "A Brush with War: World War II Art
from the Aleutians," featuring the work "R.C.A.F. Briefing
Before Kiska" by Paul Alexander Goranson.
ALASKA NATIVE ASSOCIATION
OF OREGON. Records; 1971-1977. 2 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection
contains the records of the Alaska Native Association of Oregon.
Series IV of the collection contains 1 poster relating to Association
activities.
ALASKA REPERTORY THEATRE,
INC. Records; 1976-1989. 70 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection
contains the records of the
Alaska Repertory
Theatre (ART). The collection contains 355 posters. Series 11
includes copies of posters and other promotional material advertising
Alaska Repertory Theatre productions in Anchorage, Fairbanks
and other communities in Alaska; and copies of poster advertising
various ART fund raising events and the ART internship program.
Included are posters for "Diamond Studs," the southeastern
Alaska tour of "Will Rogers U.S.A.," "Fools"
(Anchorage and other communities), "Wings," "Pantaglieze,"
"Pump Boys and Dinettes," and other productions; and
poster for ART fund raising events including a Tea Dance, and
a Grand Tour and Wine Tasting party.
ANCHORAGE AREA CHARTER COMMISSION, 1970-1971. Records;
1969-1971. 5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The Anchorage Area Charter Commission was
formed in 1969 to write a charter providing for the unification
of the governments of the City of Anchorage and the Greater Anchorage
Area Borough into the Municipality of Anchorage. This collection
consists of the operating records of the Anchorage Area Charter
Commission. Series 6, Publicity, includes 2 posters from the
Commission's "One People" project.
ANCHORAGE CIVIC OPERA ASSOCIATION.
Records; 1962-1967, 1972-1984. 8.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection
contains the records of the Anchorage Civic Opera Association. Part
D, Series 5, of this collection contains 20 posters dating from
1976 to 1983. The posters served as advertisements for various
operas produced by the Anchorage Civic Opera Association. The
poster of the 1980 production of Verdi's "Rigoletto"
is autographed by the performers, and one of the posters for
the 1982 production of "Tosca" is a limited edition
numbered 436/500.
ANCHORAGE COMMUNITY CHORUS.

This collection
contains the records of the Anchorage Community Chorus. Series
5 of this collection contains 37 advertising posters consisting
of 1 copy for "Pirates of Penzance", 1968; and 36 copies
for "Alaska Sings", 1967.
ANCHORAGE SYMPHONY LEAGUE. Records; 1946-1992. 12
cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records of the
Anchorage Symphony League as well as records of the Anchorage
Symphony Orchestra, the Anchorage Chamber Symphony, and the Anchorage
Symphony String Quartet. Series 4 includes 1 poster advertising
an interior design seminar sponsored by the League.
LAWRENCE AND OLGA DOHENY FAMILY. Papers; 1917-1980. 21.85 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contains 8 posters. Three
relate to businesses in Cordova, one concerns a production at
the Dawson City Gold Rush Festival, and the last poster (4 copies)
advertises the Dawson City Gold Rush Festival.

BENZIE OLA "RUSTY"

This collection
contains the papers and photographs of Rusty Dow, Alaskan artist
and truck driver. Series 7 of this collection contains 126 items
of Rusty Dow's artwork. The series includes a sketchbook, sketches
(some on onion paper), pencil and pen drawings, copies of sketches,
works in oil on paper, works in many media on mylar, original
greeting and post cards, and artist's supplies.
KARL F. EID (b. 1909). Papers; 1937-1998. 1.75 cu.

The collection consists of papers documenting
Eid's professional culinary career and those documenting skiing
and ski jumping in the Anchorage area. Series 3 includes 1 poster
from the Alaska Ski Jumping Club.

contains the papers of noted Alaska poet, Ruben Gaines. Series
4 of this collection contains 5 drawings and prints including

The collection consists of the Alaskan Black History related papers of George Harper, president and co-founder of the Blacks in Alaska History Project, Inc. Series 16 of the collection, Artwork, contains a framed art print of the painting, "The Bear Visits Kodiak," by L. Saupe.

This collection
contains the papers of Richard T. Harris, prospector and co-founder
of Juneau, and of members of his
family. Series
5 of this collection contains a group of 18 drawings, including
caricatures, drawn by William J. Harris.
JOHN S. HELLENTHAL. Papers; 1907, 1917, 1923, 1941, 1950-1966,

This collection contains papers relating
to John Hellenthal's personal and political activities, as well
as his work as a member of the State House of Representatives.
Series 3 of his personal papers contains multiple copies of 1
William Egan campaign poster.
CHRISTINE HELLER (1907-1990).

This collection
contains the papers of an Alaskan botanist and nutritionist,
Christine Heller. Series 7, subseries 1 of this collection contains
4 small drawings on seal skin by Wilbur
Walluk, an Alaska native artist known for his works on animal
skin.

Papers of a UAA
faculty member and head of the Theater Department. Series 2 of
this collection includes 21 posters and 12 scenic drawings from
productions and events produced by UAA.
MEL KALKOWSKI (b. 1947). Papers;

ft. Inventory.
This collection
contains miscellaneous papers of Mel Kalkowski, a UAA staff member
involved in public relations. Series 3 of this collection contains
33 posters relating to events held on the UAA campus. The events
including theater productions, musical performances, sports events,
films, and conferences.
ROGER LANG (1929-1987). Papers; ca. 1966-1978. 8.2
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection consists primarily of records
relating to Roger Lang's involvement in various native organizations
in Alaska. Included are: records relating to lobbying and to
various organizations including the Alaska Federation of Natives,
the Alaska Native Foundation, Sealaska Corporation, the Central
Council of Tlingit and Haida Indians, as well as various state
boards and commissions. Included in this collection is 1 1973
campaign poster for Emil Notti.
CHARLES V. LUCIER (b. 1926).

This collection
contains the papers and photographs of an
Alaskan anthropologist/archaeologist, Charles Lucier. Series
7 consists of 45 pieces of art work by Charles Lucier;
included are pencil drawings, watercolors, pen and ink drawings,
and 1 etched copper plate. Series 8 consists of
1 framed drawing (pen and ink wash) by Robert Mayokok and 115
pieces of artwork by Charles Lucier's wife, children, and grandchildren.
SAM McCLAIN (1919-1994). Papers;

This collection
consists of the papers and art work of an Anchorage area artist.
Series 4 consists of place name files for 135 towns or areas,
primarily in Alaska. The files include pen and ink and pencil
drawings, black and white photocopies of Sam McClain's watercolors,
and sketches. Series 6 contains 8 different black and white art
prints including prints of watercolors and of pen and ink drawings
of Russian Orthodox Churches. Series 7 includes 18 different
art note cards containing pen and ink drawings in two groups
denoted as Collectors Item Series Group No. 1, Sam McClain Art
Studio, Anchorage, Alaska, Copyright 1971 (Russian Orthodox churches)
and Collectors Item Series Group No. 2, Sam McClain Art Studio,

The collection consists of the Alaska related papers of a couple who taught in Anchorage schools in the 1960s. The artwork in the collection consists of three different Alaska Native color drawings by John Everitt and Giersdorf.

This collection
contains the papers and photographs of the John and Linda Nelson
and records of Alaska Stagecraft, Inc. Part B, Series and contains
107 posters from productions in Anchorage and other communities.
OLDER PERSONS ACTION GROUP.

The OPAG organization serves as an advocate for senior
citizens in Anchorage and in Alaska in matters relating to housing,
health and welfare, legislation affecting the elderly, and others. Series 5b of this collection
contains 4 posters promoting healthy living among older people.
PHILIP AND RETTA REED. Papers; n.d. 1907, 1915-1981. 1.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists primarily of papers relating to Philip Reed's military service. Included are correspondence, a draft history of the Alaska Communications System, letters of commendation and appreciation, discharge and promotion papers, pay vouchers, and Philip Reed's personnel file. Series 5 includes 5 caricature drawings by Philip Reed, produced while he served in the Army in World War II.
RUTH ARCAND PARK PROJECT. Papers; 1968-1985. .25
cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of correspondence,
letters of testimony, legal documents, newspaper clippings, newsletters,
and other materials concerning Section 16, Ruth Arcand, and her
efforts to get Section 16 declared park land. The materials were
put together as part of a presentation before the Anchorage Assembly
to have the Section 16 park land named Ruth Arcand Park. The
collection includes 15 posters featuring headlines from the Anchorage
Daily News and the Anchorage Times related to the
Park Project.
BENJAMIN B. TALLEY (1903-1998).

This collection
contains papers relating to Brig. Gen. Talley, U. S. Army Corps
of Engineers, in Alaska and elsewhere. Series 4, Business and
Professional Interests, includes 1 watercolor drawing presented
to Gen. Talley of Metcalf & Eddy Inc. at his farewell party
at DaNang, Republic of Vietnam, March 1967.
MILDRED STRATTON WILSON (1909-1973).
Papers; 1925, 1934, 1936-1940, 1944-1981, 1987. 5.8 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection
contains the research materials on copepoda of Dr. M. S. Wilson,
the first Alaskan to receive an NSF grant. Series
8 of this collection consists of notes, figures, and drawings
related to both specific and unidentified projects. The drawings
are of different types and parts of copepods.
BETZI AND LYMAN WOODMAN. Papers; 1914-1989. 14 cu.
ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of Betzi and Lyman Woodman.
Series XI of the Woodman Papers contains several pieces of art.
These include 3 copied drawings and paintings including "St.
Michael's Redoubt;" "Fort Yukon in June, 1867;"
and "Douglas C-124 'Globemaster II';" all undated.
Original artwork (3 items) includes the Emblem of the 5039th
Air Base Wing; "I'm afraid this is going to cure me completely
of thinking I know better than my compass! Once-is too often,
courtesy of the R.A.F.;" and "I'm afraid this is going
to cure me completely of forgetting to find out what all these
gadgets in the cockpit are for! Once-is too often, courtesy of
R.A.F.;" all original artwork is dated c. 1940s. Also, there
are 2 original illustrations (by Ted Leonhardt) for an article
by Lyman Woodman published in Alyeska Reports (1975).
